Interns don’t just make tea and coffee

Oh no, I’m in no way a glorified barista; I am involved in a lot of what Hilary and Lucy get up to. I’m still learning the ropes, so I’m not put under too much pressure yet, but I love how much responsibility I have and that I get to learn about the sector by doing rather than simply watching and making notes. Being involved is great, but it is challenging; I wasn’t expecting to be as included as I am (at least at this early stage). However, I love that some responsibility has been placed on my shoulders because I thrive when I’m given some stimulating work to do.

How much research??

I have been assigned to a few clients and am aiding Lucy and Hilary in their tasks for them. This includes scheduling social and writing blogs for clients. I didn’t realise how much information I would be required to know to do something as simple as a tweet. Well now I’ve been enlightened and realise that I not only need to know as much as I can about the client and what they are getting up to; but I also need to know as much as I can about their industry too.

Flexible working does work!

On my first day, Lucy said, ‘If you are stuck on something, I would much rather you left the office for ten minutes to clear your head than stare at a blank screen for two hours, it’s much easier to come up with new ideas when your brain is ready to focus’. I didn’t realise that it was able to be done at work. In the office we work on trust; as long as you are on time for clients, that you do your allotted hours and essentially don’t make a mockery of the idea then you are welcome to work more flexibly. It’s nice to know that there is this level of trust at work and that if I did need to pop out for a little bit to clear my head, then there is freedom to do so.

I am Miss Proofy-Pants

As a recent graduate who has studied BA English Literature with Film & Theatre, I am no stranger to proof reading. In fact, I didn’t realise how picky I was when it came to proof reading. The years of grammar and syntax being ingrained has paid off and now I am proofing more and more articles, websites and blog posts. Now when I have a spare moment and something needs proof-reading I get a call to action via email, or piece of paper thrown at me with a remark usually along the lines of: ‘Miss Proofy-Pants please read this for me thank youuuuu’.

Friday is Thaiday

I haven’t really had much experience with Thai food aside from the odd Thai Green Curry. This office is pretty good at eating healthily. They only ‘eat frogs’ (Freddo’s) on the very odd occasion. So, when Jess, Hilary and Lucy suggested that we eat Thai I was shocked. Was this their guilty pleasure? Something they had on the odd occasion? Nope, Friday is (generally) Thaiday. I didn’t realise how much better it is for you than other takeaways, like Chinese. I get cravings for unhealthy, comfort food after a busy week so to know that there is something that I can have at work that is better for you is great. Also, we are right next door to a Thai restaurant so of course we are going to snap that opportunity up!

What a great start!

Overall it has been an overwhelming but enjoyable week. I have found some aspects difficult, like managing time efficiently but I think that comes with time and understanding of new systems and workloads. I love being part of the team already and cannot wait to see what else gets put my way. I’m excited to meet all the clients I will be working with and look forward to working with Lucy and Hilary for the foreseeable future.
